Define "renewable"

Most/all renewable power is based on nuclear reactions.  Wind is powered by heating of the atmosphere by the Sun, waves are generated by wind and solar is self explanatory. About the only form of renewable power that could be significant and is not generated by the giant nuclear fusion reactor at the centre of our solar system is tidal, and even that is gravitationally influenced by the sun.  These renewables are only renewable on the scale of the several billion years the sun has left. The reactions which power the sun are far more "renewable". Geothermal relies on the heat from the Earth's core. Some of which is ancient, some comes from nuclear decay. Not as "clean" as the sun whose hydrogen-deuterium reactions produce helium nuclei as a waste product, the decay of natural elements like uranium produce all sorts of unhealthy by-products.

Did you vote Conservative in 2015? How do you feel now?

How do you feel now, as one of the 36% of voters who voted, just 20% of those registered? You helped to put in place a Chancellor who could make 3 million of the lowest income people in our country worse off, while giving money back to the rich. The policy of capping tax credits at two children makes sense at the level of four-year-old I suppose. and don't like genuine no-work-ever benefits scroungers any more than anyone else who pays taxes for all of their working life. The policy is slightly better than the Chinese one-child-per-family policy. There is no likelihood of forced abortions or jail sentences for benefit claimants. But how long do you think it will be before the stories of starving/malnourished children in families who dared/circumstances which caused them to have three or more? It's brutal to take benefits from those who have little, or just those who have fallen on hard times for now, while as always excusing those at the top end from paying any tax at all...

AI, Californian or human?

Conversations with Google on Pixel support kind of look like they might not be entirely human... is Google using AI filters to help with customer support on Chromebooks? Hi ????,Thank you for contacting Google. It appears that you're requesting support for your Chromebook, but I'm unable to address your issue from the details that you have provided. Could you clarify what you mean by 'cold starts', and provide additional details as to what is happening to your Chromebook Pixel? Any additional detail would be greatly appreciated. If you have any more questions, please include them in your reply. I'm happy to help! Thanks, Erika The Google Support Team Erica,  When I close the lid, the Chromebook should go into "standby" and when I reopen it, be in the state I left it.  Instead of that, about 1/3rd to 1/2 the time when I open the lid it starts from cold, requiring me to login again before opening Chrome and refreshing tabs.  I end up more or l...

Two degrees is too much

The interview below was recorded 5th May 2015 on an Aussie radio station with James Hansen, a former director of a NASA research institute and NASA researcher of 46 years standing. Hansen's  original research subject in the 1960's was a planet with a runaway carbon dioxide global warming problem - our next door neighbour, Venus. He admits wind turbines and other renewables can help a bit, but nowhere near enough. If you're interested in this subject, please spare a few minutes to listen to it.  http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/breakfast/two-degrees-of-global-warming-is-not-safe/6444698

My younger self would probably be ashamed...

I have to admit I've even changed my views on UK nuclear deterrence. In the 1980's, when I didn't quite join the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the world was different. As far as we knew, the Soviets and the United States had vast numbers of ICBM warheads, enough to destroy most cities and military sites in either country many times over, with plenty left over to take us out. Many of us growing up then thought there was a significant risk that a devastating war on the scale of an extinction level event could start by accident, or by  a first-strike decision by either side deciding the only way to eliminate the threat was to eliminate the other. It seemed that the UK and France, the only other nuclear-armed powers, had almost trivial numbers of weapons. That we could demonstrate by scrapping Polaris, how unacceptable we felt these weapons were  and that, however war-mongering the leaders on either side, they should start to aim for a reducing parity until the weapon...

Got a good deal on an ex-display PVR from LG with blu-ray. Sold as new with a two year warranty, in my country it's basically the same as buying a new product without a box. I bought it for the HD PVR and to replace a failed DVD player, not primarily for blu-ray. I don't intend to buy all our DVD collections on the new format just for a few extra pixels. But I thought I'd buy a blu-ray of a movie we hadn't seen before, just to make sure everything was working properly and in case we wanted to buy more at some stage. So, brand new player, essentially a 2013 model, brand new blu-ray disc from 20th Century Fox. A 2012 film "Lincoln" with the blu-ray released in 2013. Plays the 20th C Fox just fine, then this: I'd updated the player to the latest software release already. Here's the answer LG Support gave me as to why it won't play: First of all, thank you for taking time out of your day to contact ourselves in relation to your  LG HR93...

Have the terrorists in Paris achieved the opposite of what they wanted?

Maybe I'm a hopeless optimist, but the reports on the public reaction to the terrible events in France this week make me wonder something. Have the terrorists, now reported as financed by Al Qaeda, not amateur lone wolves, have achieved the exact opposite of their presumed intent? It sounds to me like most of the people of France, and standing shoulder to shoulder, other Europeans, including the British people, citizens of the US, religious, non-religious, Muslims, Christians and others all over the world united in one thing. The terror world of the Islamists, one mullah's version of Sharia law imposed on women unequally with men at the point of a Kalashnikov will not stand. We demand freedom. Freedom of thought, expression, religion and none. As long as you do not try to impose your opinions/religion on others through the use of violent force, anything else goes. Please offend me, offend my prophet - the Flying Spaghetti Monster as it happens - ask for the fleas of a thous...
