Closed societies a threat to us all?
Until recently the Islamic dictatorship of Iran maintained it had almost no cases of Covid-19. Now we find the number's nearly 3000 with senior members of their government sick.
China is another authoritarian regime where its people have no say in who governs them and where politicians and officials cannot be held to account by members of the public.
It's more able than some countries to detain large numbers of people without trial or any cause other than suspicion they may have the virus because they live in a town with the infection. So ironically, China is doing well at controlling the virus.
It's ironic because the very reason the virus spread too far to handle in the first place was an authoritarian state where information is controlled and people can be imprisoned for speaking outside the will of The Party.
The first doctor to raise the alarm was detained in Wuhan police stations because The Party did not want to risk economic damage... Seems likely to me that countries that continue with authoritarianism, deny their own people a say in who governs them, protects officials of the state from accountability to their people, those countries regimes are demonstrably a threat to the whole of humanity.
